Test Code SYPHILISAB Treponema (Syphilis) Total Antibodies

Important Note

Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR), RPR titers and FTA-ABS confirmation testing will be reflexed according to the testing algorithm below.  An RPR titer should only be ordered when positive history of disease is known.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred Specimen:

1.0mL serum/gel

 

Acceptable Specimen:

1.0mL serum/red top without gel

Transport Temperature/Stability

Preferred Transport Temperature:

Refrigerated (cold packs)

 

Specimen Stability (after centrifugation):

Refrigerated:  7 days

Frozen >7 days

Testing Algorithm

  • If Treponemal (Syphilis) total antibody is positive, then rapid plasma reagin (RPR) will be performed at an additional charge.
  • If RPR is positive, then RPR titer will be performed at an additional charge.
  • If RPR is negative with no history of syphillis, then FTA-ABS will be performed at an additional charge.
